About Ethiraj College

Ethiraj College for Women was founded by the illustrious Barrister-at-Law Thiru V.L Ethiraj in 1948 to empower young women through holistic education. The college is spread over 9 acres and is located in the heart of Chennai. The college is recognized with the award of “College with Potential for Excellence” and was reaccredited with Grade A by NAAC in 2013. The college has been awarded the 65th Rank at the All-India level by the National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India for 2022. The college has a dedicated team of over 332 faculty members and around 7600 students.

About the Department

The Department of Commerce was established in 1975 to meet the ever-growing demand of women aspirants for the B.Com. course. The journey started with an initial strength of 50 students and one faculty – Dr. Mrs. K. Nirmala Prasad, when only 5 colleges in the State of Tamil Nadu were offering the course for women. In 1981, six years after its inception, the department was upgraded with a postgraduate program in Commerce. It was during the same year, that the Department of Commerce started to offer a B.Com. course in the Self-supporting stream. With the pressing demand for the course, a second batch with a strength of 70 students was started in 1984-85 and later on a third batch with 70 students was started in 2016-17.

Today, the Department stands tall with a strength of around 950 students and successful alumnae in different walks of life. The Department has had a meteoric rise, being the first among women’s colleges in Chennai to be upgraded to a Research Department with the introduction of the M.Phil. course in 1989-90 and the Doctoral Program in 1994-95.

The Department offers professional education of immense value, equipping the students with adequate knowledge in Commerce that provides a firm foundation for personal fulfilment, professional success, and productive participation in society.

About The Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI)

The Madras Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) is one of the premier industrial promotion organizations in Southern India and is currently into its 186th year of service to trade and industry. Established in 1836, the Madras Chamber is the oldest chamber of commerce and industry in Tamil Nadu and is one of the five promoter chambers of the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), New Delhi.

The Madras Chamber has been an integral part of the growth of commerce and industry in the Southern region and plays a formidable role in policy making and advocacy in addition to providing the services such as Arbitration services for its members, issue of certificate of origin, visa recommendation letters to member companies, as well as facilitating B2B linkages.

The Chamber is a proud recipient of a special award as a Responsible BMO (Business Membership Organization) instituted by the Foundation for MSME clusters and supported by Ministry of MSME, Department of Science & Technology.
